Integration not Segregation
Asylum seekers have been accommodated at the former RAF base in Wethersfield, Essex since 12th July 2023. The base is ringed by security fences, and monitored with 24/7 surveillance by on-site security guards and CCTV. It is located 1.5 miles from the village of Wethersfield, and almost 12 miles from the nearest large town. There is no pedestrian access nor is the site served by public transport.
Care4Calais has been supporting residents at the camp for months, and they have consistently told our case workers that living at the site feels like being imprisoned.
It is clear – sites like former RAF Wethersfield and the Bibby Stockholm are de facto prison camps.
We’re launching a legal challenge against the government’s segregation of asylum seekers
The accommodation at Wethersfield and on the Bibby Stockholm is a form of segregation, and it falls far short of the standards James Cleverly, the Home Secretary, is obliged by law to provide.
Worse, people with vulnerable mental health conditions are being sent to those sites, in contravention of the Government’s own guidelines.
We’re putting the Government on notice. STOP imprisoning asylum seekers in camps and barges, and start tackling the REAL problems in the UK’s asylum system.
If they don’t, we will see them in court.
We need to do this to help asylum seekers, but we can go ahead only with your support. Please donate to our legal fund.
